Four people were brutally murdered and a fifth narrowly escaped with her life supposedly at the request of mobster Eddie Nash. The crime is believed to be in retribution for a violent break-in of Nash’s own home by the gang. Porn star John Holmes was thought to be an accomplice to the break-in at Nash’s house and was later forced to betray the Wonderland gang members. The true story will probably never be known as Holmes died of AIDS complications in 1988.
Don't plan on it coming out next October, though.
Bugs crawling out of mouths, corpses stiffly rising from slabs, spirits that go from pretty young things to withered old crones, unexpectedly gaping mouths and melting faces — all present and accounted for. Spooky figures have a habit of being one place when a moving camera first catches them, then suddenly appear to be much, much closer when the shot turns back to reframe them. Two of the more distinguishable ghosts, a J-horror–chic woman known as “The Bent-Neck Lady” and a lanky floating ghoul with a cane, are genuinely unsettling. Pregnant women may want to skip the final installment; people with bum tickers may want to bypass the series’ back half entirely.

In the absence of any real explanation, some fans are arguing the poem is there specifically to set up a second season, should Netflix choose to greenlight one. Thanks to Hill House, Olivia becomes suicidal. The Hills' story parallels the Crains' in all kinds of ways, and the show wisely uses the family to establish the stakes. If the Crains aren't careful, they'll end up exactly like Poppy, William, and the rest — and that's definitely not a good thing.

There’s not much you can gather about Hill House’s past from the episodes, so to get an answer to this one you’ll have to rely on the stories from Count to Seven. Next we’ve got Poppy and William’s wheelchair-bound son, who appears in front of Olivia Crain and bangs the walls as he can’t speak, making him the one who terrified Shirley and Theo at the beginning of the series. But the inventory of tried-and-true horror tropes are being used to more sinister ends than just the art of the “Boo! ” As a genre exercise, The Haunting of Hill House is a better-than-decent stab at a supernatural story, the equivalent of a well-executed if slightly overlong bass solo. As a tale of what happens when the ties that bind are the same ones that gag you, and scar you, and occasionally strangle you to death, it’s absolutely terrifying.

Hill House is a mansion in a location never specified, surrounded by hills. Dr. John Montague, an investigator of the supernatural, Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who resents caring for her demanding, disabled mother,[5] Theodora, a bohemian artist, and Luke Sanderson, the young heir to Hill House, meet there at Montague's behest. Montague hopes to find scientific evidence of the existence of the supernatural. He rents Hill House for a summer and invites as his guests several people whom he has chosen because of their experiences with paranormal events.
At some point, William bricked himself up in Hill House's basement and died there, leaving his body for Hugh to discover decades later. Her son ended up in a wheelchair, and could only communicate by pounding on the walls. In true Hill House fashion, though, that's not the end of their stories. William's ghost is the top-hat aficionado who haunts Luke.
But then that raises questions about why Olivia succumbed so much to Hill House's corrupting influence while Nell remained relatively untouched. As Flanagan explained, just like how people process grief differently, people react to Hill House differently. "Some people are just more vulnerable. Or more special. There are more ways in, and darkness can infiltrate and take root in their lives in different ways. But there are no characters in our show who are immune," he said. Theo's (Kate Siegel) ability -- to pick up on information and emotion through touch -- has nothing to do with her time at Hill House.
The real mystery here is who came to Abigail's aid right after she died. The beautiful ghost definitely wasn't of this time, but she wasn't a spirit we had seen before. Likely, the woman's identity would have been revealed during Flanagan's planned history of Hill House, but for now fans are left speculating. Some theorize that since time isn't linear, maybe this is an even younger version of Mrs. Dudley (Annabeth Gish). However, we're going to take things one step further and imagine that it's actually the ghost of Mrs. Dudley's mother-in-law. We know that she worked at Hill House, so maybe she died there too!

Okay, now that that's out of the way, let's discuss what in the hell—literally! If you're reading this, I'm going to naturally assume that you've made it all the way through The Haunting of Hill House, or you were too scared to watch it and want to learn about the ending so you can talk about it with everyone else.
